If the game requires online servers to play, you can't sign into game servers without the update anyway. The console downloads it first before installing from disc, then lets yopu play. So as soon as you pop the disc in, you'll get a notification that the game needs an update. You can play while installing from Disc, but if there is any update for the game, it downloads it first while installing. Doesn't xbox one allow you to play while downloading an update? Nowadays I usually just download them, let them update, and burn the steam backup to a BD-R disc, or console games to a USB HDD so I won't have to download it again later. Thus the disc isn't very future proof, and doen t preserve the game like an older physical game, like from the cartridge/floppy days. So the disc doesn't do me much good, as if i decided to pop it in 10 years from now, I'd still need the digital-side update to play it proper. You can buy this disc version, but release version on disc is so broken that it still requires a massive update to fix and make playable. A fair example: Halo Master Chief Collection. I am slowly starting to shed my want for physical copies, for the sole reason that so many games end up needing a massive update download anyway upon installing them, all the disc does for me now besides looking pretty on the shelf is save 15 minutes of download time. Thought nicely you can redownload them later once service dies for free without feeling bad about it. Sadly the world had moved towards where all your games are often held hostage, mostly by Steam.
